This first WD SSD Speedrun Cup Tournament brought to you by Western Digital (“Tournament Sponsor”) is designed to do more than crown a speedrunning Champion, it’s an opportunity to meet with other gamers, share gaming passions and have fun over the course of a speedrunning evening at the Fnatic Bunkr esports entertainment venue in London’s Shoreditch (“host venue”), hosted by Ceirnan Lowe (“MC”).

We have created a clear set of gameplay rules below (“Tournament Rules”) for the WD SSD Speedrun Cup Tournament 2017 (“Tournament”) along with the Tournament Terms and Conditions for each Player, to ensure that every participant is treated fairly and has a good time. All Tournament competitors are responsible for knowing these rules in advance. For the purposes hereof, the term “Player” means and refers to participants who have been invited to play in the Tournament by the Tournament Sponsor. The Tournament will be conducted according to the Tournament Rules stated below:

The Tournament will take place during the course of one evening on Thursday 23 November 2017, hosted at Fnatic Bunkr, Redchurch Street, London, E2 7DD from 18:00-22:30 GMT.
The Tournament starts with 16 players (12 selected journalists and four speedrunners) and is a knock-out format consisting of four rounds, with the winner of each game in each round making it through to the next round until we have our winner.

To the best of our ability, all media players (12 journalists) in Round 1 and Round 2 (quarter finals) will be randomly seeded in the bracket in a manner that minimizes the chances of them playing against a professional speedrunner (four speedrunners) to maximise their enjoyment and chances of winning that round. By Round 3 (semi-finals), one winning media player in their bracket will play the winning speedrunner in a bid to make it to Round 4 (the final).

Four games will be played during the tournament on PCs supplied by Novatech using WD Blue SSDs: Round 1 - I am Bread (Level: 1)
Round 2 (quarter finals) - Cuphead (Level: Forest Follies and Botanic Panic)
Round 3 (semi finals) - Portal 1 (Level: All chambers up to the end of Chamber 8)
Round 4 (the final) - Super Meat Boy (Level: World 1 ‘The Forest’)
Each game will consist of two players speedrunning against each other to complete one level of that game in the fastest time. The game level is determined by the Tournament Sponsor before the Tournament begins. Each game is allocated a maximum time of 20 minutes. The winner of each game in each round is the player who completes the allocated game level in the fastest time.

The players must agree to use the default character in each game for gameplay. Each game begins with a countdown and only starts when the MC shouts “GO!”. The game ends when the endpoint of a required level / world, agreed upon by the Tournament Sponsor, has been reached by a player or the 20-minute round ends, the MC shouts “STOP!” and the MC declares the winner. At the end of the allotted time for a round, if neither Player has completed the level, the winner will be the Player that is at the furthest point in the level at the time the round is over. Players will be required to comply with the Tournament Sponsor’s instructions and decisions throughout the Tournament.

Each of the two Players in each match are responsible for being at the gaming station when their match is called. Any Player not present, without giving the MC or Tournament Sponsor a valid reason for not being present, will have a period of two minutes to report to their station. After the two minute period has expired, the missing Player automatically forfeits the match.

Players understand, acknowledge, and agree that by participating they are pitting their skills in this Speedrun Cup against those of others and agree that the matches are determined by the skill of the participants and that luck or chance plays a negligible role in the outcome of the event.

There will be no ties in any match. Anyone refusing to play any match (including the final) will be disqualified and forfeit all rights to any titles or prizes they might have otherwise earned.

By participating in the tournament, each Player agrees to have their matches and game(s) be streamed on and featured here / on the Tournament Sponsor’s website and on other social media channels owned by the Tournament Sponsor.

Players must play the game to the best of their ability at all times. All forms of cheating, collusion and unreasonable behaviour will not be tolerated. The Tournament Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the operation of the Tournament or to be acting in violation of the Terms and Conditions or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. The Tournament Sponsor and host venue have a zero tolerance policy towards violence, threats of violence, intimidation, harassment (sexual or otherwise), visible intoxication from drugs or alcohol, gambling and collusion of any kind with your competitors. Anyone disqualified in this manner forfeits all rights to any titles or prizes they might have otherwise earned for the Tournament.

Tournament results will be posted on and other WD owned social media following the end of the Tournament on 23 November 2017.
